Exercises
Do it when something happens – or do it now, just in case? Practise if and in case with business examples, plus the tenses that follow in case.
if
A condition: something happens only when (or after) the other thing happens.
The generator will start automatically if there’s a power cut.
in case
A precaution: we do something now, to be ready because something might happen.
We’ve installed a generator in case there’s a power cut.
in case + present
For the future – not ‘will’.
I’ll bring the contract in case the client wants to sign today.
in case + past
For a precaution in the past.
We booked a bigger room in case more people came.
Does the action happen after the event – or before it, to be prepared?
Present for the future, past for the past – never ‘will’.
1I’ll bring a printed copy of the contract in case the client (want) to sign it today.
2I took a printed copy of the contract in case the client (want) to sign it.
3We booked a bigger room in case more people (come) to the workshop.
4Let’s keep some budget aside in case costs (rise) next quarter.
