Even if or even though quiz

Is it a fact, or only a possibility? Practise even if and even though – and the verb forms that follow them – with business examples.

Quick rules

even though

It is true, but the result is surprising. (= although)

Even though we hit our target, the board wasn’t happy.

even if

It doesn’t matter whether it happens or is true – the result is the same.

Even if it rains, the launch will take place outside.

even if + present

For a possible future situation – not ‘will’.

Even if the client agrees, we’ll still need to cut costs.

even if + past

For an imaginary situation, with ‘would’.

Even if I had the budget, I wouldn’t hire another consultant.

1. A fact or a possibility?

Is it true – or might it happen?

1  we hit our sales target, the board still wasn’t happy.
2  we hit our sales target, the board won’t be happy – they want more.
3  it rains, the product launch will still take place outside.
4  he worked very hard, he was never promoted.
5  the market is struggling, our sales have grown by 8% this year.
6  the market recovers next year, we won’t reach our targets.
7  I was exhausted, I stayed until the end of the negotiation.

2. Imaginary situations

‘Even if’ with the past and ‘would’ – compared with real facts.

1  I had the budget, I still wouldn’t hire another consultant.
2  they offered me double the salary, I wouldn’t move to head office.
3  she loves her job, she says she wants to retire early.
4  the office was closer to my home, I would still prefer to work remotely.

3. The verb after ‘even if’ and ‘even though’

Type the right form of the verb.

1Even if the client (agree) to our price next week, we’ll still need to cut costs.

2Even if we (win) the contract, we wouldn’t have enough staff to deliver it.

3Even if it (rain) tomorrow, the event will go ahead.

4Even though we (lose) our biggest client last year, profits went up.

5Even if I (have) more time, I wouldn’t take on another project.
