    Preparing Answers to Specific Questions

Questions based on the job title and job description

Before the course begins, I always ask for the specific job title and specific job description of the position that you are applying for.  I also get a copy of your CV (resume) if you wish to share this as well. Based on this I create a personalised Google Doc with a detailed list of questions that you may be asked in the interview. This includes:

- Behavioural Questions

- Experience Questions

- Job-Specific Questions

- Management Questions

- General Classic Interview Questions

For each question I provide a list of optional phrases which can be used to help you to sound more professional and impress the interviewer.

I will also send a guide on how to structure the most important questions, and you will find out the importance of the magic STAR structure, which is the key to answering experience questions effectively.

Training in delivery of answers

During lessons we focus on training answers to questions.  We practice giving answers to questions in practice interview situations, and we attempt to add some professional phrases into the answers as we go through the interview.    I record the students answers onto the Google Doc, and I correct grammar and vocabulary errors when students give answers.

We then use these given answers as a base for a second mock interview in the next lesson, and I use special techniques to help students to use new phrases in a spontaneous pressurized interview situation.  I will explain the techniques below, or if you would like me to demonstrate them, why not book a free trial lesson!  I also use techniques to help students to correct grammar mistakes.

The key to success in the interview is to repeat answers and to prepare them in detail.

If, like many English learners, you need to feel more confident in your interview, repetition of answers can really help for such a pressurised situation.

    Preparing for the Unexpected

When a student is able to give some great answers with professional phrases and accurate grammar, all in a spontaneous manner, the second stage is to work on preparing for the unexpected.  We all know that anything can happen in an interview!

Preparing answers and stories that can be used for multiple questions

One trick which is key to interviews is to learn 4 or 5 stories which can be used to answer various questions.  We will find out what those stories are, and how you can structure them in order to keep the interviewer interested.

Quick switching of questions to become familiar with a pressurised interview environment

Switching between questions very quickly is one of the best techniques to prepare students for the unexpected.  Towards the end of training, I aim to simulate a high pressure uncomfortable environment, by mixing up the different interview questions in a random order, so that you don't know what question to expect next!  This trains students' reflexes and their ability to think quickly in English in stressful and difficult situations!

Learn my 6 golden improvisation phrases for questions you didn't know were coming!

As we know, interviews can be highly unpredictable, and it is impossible to cover every single possible question in training.  If you receive a question you are not sure of, I will teach you the key skills for improvisation, as well as 6 golden phrases that can make you sound impressive in any question!

Phrases you can use to delay your answer

Have you ever been in an interview where you are not sure what to say in your answer?  This situation isn't as scary as you think with training from my job interview course. I teach students a range of phrases they can use if they don't know what to say!  What is even better is that the phrases are aimed to make you sound professional at the same time!  In a role-play interview situation, I sometimes throw some strange questions into the interview to give the student some practice in using these phrases and thinking of answers quickly.

Learn the different ways that questions are asked

What are your main weaknesses? What areas of your field do you feel that you would like to improve?

After preparing for an interview, we want to make sure that we are not confused by questions just because the interviewer is asking it in a different way!

To avoid this nightmare situation, I provide detailed training on the different ways that interviewers can structure each question. When we train in role-play interviews I always ask each question in a different way each time to keep you prepared for anything!

1. Getting phrases into your spontaneous English

There are so many great phrases you can use in your interview to make you sound professional, and increase your chance of getting the job.  The question is how do we learn these phrases so quickly? And will I forget them all when I am in the interview?

The answer here is that I specialise in English fluency and getting new vocabulary into spontaneous English.  This is a very basic review of the process:

- Vocabulary review at the beginning of each lesson

- In mock interview training, phrases are written on my whiteboard so that the student can see them when training answers to interview questions.  This helps students to transfer vocabulary from paper into spontaneous speaking through repetition.  If you would like to see this method in action, check out my demo lesson for only $2!

2. Limiting mistakes in your interview

The key to success in job interviews is not just to learn the grammar mistakes you are making, but to be able to correct these grammar mistakes in a high-pressure job interview.  This means that students need to be trained to use correct structures in their spontaneous spoken English.  I use a special technique to do this, which follows the steps below:

- 5-minute review of all the classic interview grammar mistakes at the beginning of each lesson

- The main grammar mistakes will be visible on my whiteboard (see the video above) at all times to force the mistakes out of your spontaneous English.  through repetition this mistakes will disappear and become automatic in your answers to interview questions.  To see in more detail how this works, why not try a demonstration lesson!

Using the wrong tense for the wrong question

The present perfect, past simple, present simple and present continuous tenses are the most frequently used tenses in the job interview.  These are also the tenses that students get wrong most frequently.  Learn how to use specific verb tenses for specific questions to avoid confusion!  If you would like to find out more about which tenses are needed for which question, why not try a $2 demo lesson!

Using 'for' and 'since incorrectly

Using these two phrases correctly is so important when talking about your previous experience or your current position.  Many students are confused with what tense they need to use with 'for' and 'since'.  'For' can actually be used with any verb tense, but the meaning completely changes if you use the wrong one.  This can cause a lot of confusion, to the point where the interviewer may not know if you are still working at a company or if you have already left!

Countable and uncountable nouns

This one is probably the most common mistake of all. Some of the most important words in your interview will be nouns such as 'experience' or 'time', which can be used as countable or uncountable nouns. Unfortunately, the meaning of these nouns completely changes according to how you use them, and this can confuse the interviewer.  In the Job Interview Training Course, we take a look at how to use these nouns correctly and to make your answers so much more understandable as a result!

 Mispronouncing past tenses

Unfortunately, some of the most common words used in the interview are some of the past tenses which are often mis-pronounced.  My methods described above can help you not only to recognise these mistakes, but also to get them right in spontaneous speaking!  Have a think about how you would pronounce implemented/decided/needed

 Classic mini-errors with little words

I am HR manager

I work in Coca-Cola company

I travel 30 minutes to my work

Can you see the mistakes here?  Sign up for the Job Interview Course to gain access to my database of the most common interview errors and how to correct them! With the techniques described above, we will use my fluency strategy to get these small phrases correct automatically in a pressure situation.

When I started lessons 3 years ago I set David a challenge.  I wanted him to make my lessons dependent on my skills and how my skills will grow.  There are 2 types of teachers, one is learning step-by-step from textbooks, but David is different.  He adapts his style to my needs, because I wanted to do it a different way.  It is the basis of our lessons.  I feel more confident with my English in present days, which is very important because I travel more often than not to English speaking countries.

Jakub Jedlicka Managing Director, Casablanca Inc.

I have had lessons with David for 2.5 years.  I like the style of lessons, especially the articles he comes with.  Every time the latest and interesting stories with useful phrases and vocabulary.  We are used to discussing different topics for the first half of our lessons, with focusing on mistakes David tries to find in my talking.  David is able to describe English basic rules as well as harder grammar in such a different way to my experience from school.  I have learned a lot of business phrases I am able to use at my work.  I am also not afraid of speaking without thinking about grammar before.  Finally, I have thrown away bad habits I learned in our educational system.

Marcela Bernatova Project Manager, Sentient s.r.o

David’s lessons provide everything I need for my personal improvement.  We are not rigidly linked to one specific textbook or topic, and that’s great for me. I enjoy lessons, David is the best teacher I ever had (not only because of his unique explanation of conditionals).  If I had not visited lessons, I would not be comfortable to listen to the BBC or read something original, it feels easier now.

Martin Nosek HR Manager, Ceska Sporitelna Bank. Prague, Czech Republic

I have had English lessons with David for two years! I really appreciate his professionalism and his permanent support in my professional requirements. I was very lucky to find David as a teacher!

I am in charge of the operations in Latin America and I must present to a Committee the potential financial investments in English language. Thanks to David I feel more confident with my writing and speaking English skills. English learning is an ongoing process and I am willing to make a strong effort with David’s support of course.

Monica Eras Investment Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean at Frankfurt School Financial Services

I was looking for assistance to move my English to the really advanced level as it was required at my new job. In the very first lesson we defined together the goals as well as the ways to achieve them. Every next step towards being professional in English was as effective as possible since the lessons with David were thoroughly prepared and well-structured.

One of the distinctive features of David’s advanced lessons which I personally appreciate very much is ability to work on several aspects of language in parallel keeping up the highest standard of the learning process.

The most important thing is that David keeps his word and ”boosts your English” and moreover he is a fan of your successful results.

Valentina Kipel Business Analyst, Minsk

David has really helped me to bring my spoken English to the next level. Interesting and challenging classes.

Martin Perrone Finance Director, AB Mauri Hispano-America. Buenos Aires

David is a great teacher. He is kind, polite, professional and a deep connoisseur of the Language. Also, David is very flexible and he can model the lesson as your needings. I had many Business English lessons and job interview preparation and he was more than a teacher, he was a coach for me.

Daniel Carrara Product Manager, The App Business. London, UK

David is a great teacher. He prepares his lessons and adapt them depending on my objectives. He helps me to have confidence in my English pronunciation

Estelle Garcin Financial Controller. Paris

I started having lessons with David only two months ago, and he quickly assessed my level of English and identified the areas we should work on. So far, I see the progress and I feel more confident knowing that we are tackling the areas I’ve been struggling with for a long time.

Lucas Larcher Lead Lean Startup Deployment - Philip Morris International, Warsaw

David is always well-prepared and very supportive during and outside the classes. Unfailingly ready to answer any questions.
